Catch Weight
Catch Weight is terminology generally used to order items whose purchase quantity will vary. For example, an item sold by the piece such as top round may be ordered by an average weight of 20 LB, but actually weigh a little more or little less. FoodPro accommodates this situation with the concept of setting the recipe unit and inventory unit of the item to LB. The Invoice Entry and Transfer programs have embellished features to accommodate Catch Weight items at the Inventory Unit level.
To setup an item as catch weight:
Recipe Unit = LB
Inventory Unit = LB
Recipe Unit/Inventory Unit = 1
Examples with Purchase Unit may be different than LB
- Top Rounds of Beef are normally purchased on the average of 18 - 22 LB. Now, the Purchase Unit could be set as 20LB with LB for the Inventory and Recipe Unit. Then for example, when a purchase need is generated for 18.34 LB of Top Round, FoodPro will round that up to 20LB for the Purchase Requirement. When the order arrives, it may come in at 19.75 LB. Invoice entry now permits the entry of 19.75 or a fraction entry of 19 ¾ LB (the inventory unit).
- Produce items are often purchased as a bushel, but invoiced and inventoried by the LB. In the invoice entry program, to accept bushel as the purchase unit, enter a quantity as prompted. To enter the invoice by LB, enter the quantity with a decimal or fraction quantity.
- In the invoice program, after entering the decimal or fraction, the prompt: "Do you wish to enter in LB units?" is displayed, where LB represents the Inventory Unit. Select yes to proceed to the price field, and the price will automatically be converted to the Inventory Unit price. Selecting no is equivalent to accepting the Purchase Unit and requires the quantity to be an integer.
This Catch Weight by Inventory Unit concept also applies to transfers. Transfer maintenance has also been enhanced so a Catch Weight at the inventory level can be entered in decimals or fraction units following a prompt for the desired unit.
